Classic Musicals
Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) - Set in the early 1900s, this musical is filled with classic musical numbers including "The Trolley Song" and "The Boy Next Door." Although it covers a year in the life of a St. Louis family, I think of this as a Christmas musical, mostly due to Judy Garland's singing of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", plus the gorgeous red dress she wears to sing it.

State Fair (1945) - Mind you, not the later, cheesy version starring Pat Boone and Ann-Margret, but the original with Jeanne Crain and Dick Haymes. Beautifully Midwestern and wholesome, but not saccharine at all, thanks to sharper turns by Dana Andrews and Vivian Blaine as the romantic interests. Wonderful Rodgers and Hammerstein music.

Good News (1947) - I do so adore a college musical where the actors appear to be forty at least, June Allyson and Peter Lawford in this case. Let's not forget Mel Torme and a thoroughly unconvincing 1920s setting. But some very engaging musical numbers including "Lucky in Love" and "Ladies Man", as well as a song sung by Peter and June in the library (where she works) as she teaches him French.
