Five Books

Mini-lists of five books on particular topics.

Five Great Modern Horror Novels
Sharp Objects - Gillian Flynn
Gothic suspense novel about a reporter who after getting sent back to her hometown to report on the murder of little girls has to face her own demons.

The Bottoms - Joe R. Lansdale
A boyhood reminiscence of a mysterious murder in East Texas during the Great Depression. An eerie, atmospheric read.

Come Closer - Sara Gran
A first-person tale of demonic possession, as experienced by a married, loft-living, 34-year-old architect. Excellent and gripping.

The House Next Door - Anne River Siddons
A modern haunted house story, which effectively dispels the myth that houses need to be old to be haunted.

A Certain Slant of Light - Laura Whitcomb
Beautifully written ghost story told by a 130-year-old ghost who one day meets another ghost who persuades her to take someone's body and live life with him.

Five Christmas Books (That Cut through the Treacle)
The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror - Christopher Moore
Christmas, zombies, ex-television warrior queens . . . who could ask for anything more from their holiday reading?

Holidays on Ice - David Sedaris
A collection of David Sedaris's trademark dark holiday stories, featuring the great (and should be read every year) "The Santaland Diaries" of Sedaris's time spent as a Macy's Christmas elf.

Miracle and other Christmas Stories - Connie Willis
A little more heartwarming than the rest, Willis's great, almost fantastical, stories give unique slants on the holiday. Sure to be appreciated by anyone who doesn't understand why "It's a Wonderful Life" is a holiday classic, and "Miracle on 34th Street" doesn't get nearly enough love.

This Year, It Will be Different, and Other Stories - Maeve Binchy
Binchy's heroines, mostly older women and mothers, have had it up to here with Christmas and being unappreciated. Hence the title. A little bitter, but definitely still sweet.

The Unlikely Romance of Kate Bjorkman - Louise Plummer
Set in Saint Paul during the Christmas season, Kate falls in love with her older brother's friend, and narrates her story using romance novel conventions. Funny and, yes, sweet.
