Authors of Fifties Teen Romances

Although there must be hundreds of these teen romance novels which have faller into obscurity over the last few decades, the work of a few authors seems to live on in fans and collectors' hearts.

Rosamond du Jardin, whose Practically Seventeen was the first book that I remember reading in this genre, tends to specialize in the romantic troubles of charming, fully drawn characters. Books by Betty Cavanna tend towards the introspective heroine who learns something about herself. These books contain slightly more angst and less humor than du Jardin's, but are chockful of fifties sensibility. In Helen Dore Boylston's novels, the heroines are dedicated to achieving their desired career plans either as nurse or actress, but there's always time for the tall, dark and handsome love interest.

Two authors who combine romantic drama with lighthearted family complications and the character's personal growth are Janet Lambert, author of a long and complicated series involving two army families who repeatedly intertwine and marry, and Beverly Cleary, children's author whose Fifteen is practically the perfect fifties teen romance. You can read more about these authors books on their respective pages, as well as a few more outstanding authors of fifties teen romances.
